More to the Eli Whitney-Thomas Jefferson interchangeable parts. My impression is that the muskets were assembled in this fashion at Springfield MA because artisans and skilled craftsmen, like gunsmiths, seldom emigrated to America. So each step in the assembly could be completed by workmen with little or no training. Where the parts came from, I wouldn't know.

Isn’t the Ukraine supply problem summed up in the adage Generals are only prepared to fight the last war ? Who expected a replay of WWI in the Ukraine? Neither NATO or the Russians .

The black powder shortage for artillery propellent is a quirky example.
